What is the weather going to be like?
Located just south of the equator, Tanzania has a tropical climate. Arusha's elevation is 4,600 ft. on the southern slopes of Mount Meru. February is one of the hottest months with temperatures during the day reaching the low to mid 80s F, and dropping at night to the low 50s F. Rainfall averages 3.3 inches in February. The Serengeti temperatures generally range from 60F-75F in February, one of the drier months. February is typically the best weather on Mount Kilimanjaro, being the warmest and driest of the year. Even so, you will be trekking through 5 climate zones from 6,400 ft. to almost 20,000 ft., so you should be prepared for pretty much any weather condition you can imagine, with temperatures ranging from 0F-90F.
What is the Kilimanjaro route like??
Rider Type | 3 & 4
|
Trip Mileage | 43 miles (approximately 28 possible by bike)
|
| Terrain | mountainous |
Trip Elevation | 6,400-19,340 ft
|
Unlike most Trek Travel trips, cycling is an option on only 5 of the 12 days and totals under 30 miles for this entire trip. However, those miles are mountain biking on Kilimanjaro, making the riding both epic and challenging. The terrain is aerobically demanding due it's elevation between 6,000-20,000 feet above sea level. There are also technically challenging snow-covered and rocky sections, and the ever-changing weather conditions can add another level of difficulty when it turns wet and cold. We descend the most rideable route down the mountain, of which an expert rider can tackle about 80%. Rest assured that Trek Travel will provide the best route support possible, and we'll take it slow and ride cautiously.
What are the options for a non-rider travel companion?
We offer a hiking only option for this trip. The itinerary and Kilimanjaro route are the same, however the price, gear package and water project donations vary. See pricing for details.
